Stu Walters Fundraising Golf Day

Stu Walters Golf Day

The time of year has come around again for the Stu Walters fundraising golf day. In it’s sixth year the event attracted nearly 150 golfers; comprising members and guests all ready to participate in a friendly 4 man stableford competition.
Team work was they key to success especially with all four golfers having to make their scores count on the 6th and 18th holes.
At the end of the day the morning players seemed to turn in the best scores and congratulation go to the winners who were Steve Heenan, Craig Knowles, ‘Ronnie’ Foulke and James Hunt. As relative newcomers to the game and the Club it was great to see their efforts rewarded.

A huge thank you goes to Stu for all the hard work he puts in through the year; getting participants to play and also encouraging so many sponsors and volunteers to help set up the event.
A big thank you goes to the sponsors, ladies on the half way house, starters, caterers, greenskeepers, car park attendants etc etc!
Lee Morgan mentioned in the evening presentation; the event wouldn’t happen without Stu so he should take much of the credit. To date around £17,000 has been raised through his leadership.

The course looked great as did the Clubhouse. There are more pictures of the day on our Twitter page @Alfreton_Golf, check them out.

Harold Gledhill Trophy

Captain vs President Match

The highly anticipated annual match between the Captain and President took place on 2nd June. After careful consideration and negotiations between Captain Dereck Martin and President Alan Bramley, the teams were selected earlier in the week and participants notified at the pre brunch gathering today.
A shotgun start saw 11 groups set off in damp conditions to see if the Captain could take the spoils, not having won for three years!

Despite the weather improving as the afternoon went on, ‘normal service’ was resumed and as the teams came in it was clear that the hoodoo that Alan seems to hold over Dereck continued, with a final score of 7-4 to the President.

Well done to all those that participated in what was an enjoyable and hard fought match. The Harold Gledhill trophy remains in the President’s hands for at least another 12 months.

Bank Holiday Golf

Bank Holiday Mixed Competition

As the sun continued the shine this month; Alfreton’s Mixed Bank Holiday Competition took place. It was good to see some new faces taking part in this annual social game. Always played in good spirit, the random draw threw up some team combinations to keep the participants guessing who would win.

The format this year was best two from three stableford and after some close scrutiny of the final cards, the winners by just one point were June Gaunt, Dave Housley and Dave Rhodes. Runners up were last year’s Captains Olivia Dowling and Trevor Parrett ably supported by Dave Gould.
Congratulations to all the players and a special thanks to the Lady Captain, Ellie Bennett for her organisation and also Steve and Sharron for the catering on the day too.

Spring Invitation Day

Spring Invitation Day

19th May: Alfreton Golf Club Spring Invitation Day was a great success. Under constant sunshine, golfers arrived and played from early morning through to the end of the day. The course had been excellently prepared by the Greenstaff and volunteers to present it in a perfect condition and provide a true test of golf.

Captain Dereck Martin had called upon many willing helpers to make the day a fabulous and enjoyable event. Thanks go to the Ladies section for the half way house support, Professional Nev Hallam for all his assistance plus as Dereck said in his presentation speech; “all the ‘others’ too numerous to mention”.

Our Caterers provided a full range of meals from breakfast cobs first thing through to a three course meal in two sittings after the close of play. Thanks to Steve Slater and all the staff for their service and hard work too.

During the two sittings Captain Dereck, ably assisted by Vice Captain, Peter Labas awarded the prizes.

The winners were:
1st : Sean King and Darren Brooks (46pts)
2nd : Pete Labas and Steve Butt (44pts)
3rd : John Bennett and George Downes (42pts)
4th : Stu Walters and Rene Talach (41pts)
5th: Dave King and Graham Thorpe (41pts)
6th: Gordon Swain and Dave Breedon (41pts)

Longest Drive: Macauley Sutcliffe

It was a great day and fine atmosphere in the club afterwards. Thanks to our members for their support of the Day.

Successful Spring Quiz night

Spring Quiz night at Clubhouse

Mick Cockerill’s annual quiz went down a storm last night. Due to start at 7.30; with 15 minutes to go extra tables and chairs were being sought, filling up all available spaces around the Clubhouse. The scorer needed a larger sheet to add the extra teams to, there were 18 in all!

As usual the Quiz master came in for a number of challenges to the details of his questions and answers, but it was an evening of good company and entertainment.

Well done to the prize winners, first place going to ‘Villa Sure’ lead by Keith Watson and Eric Brown, with the ‘Yorkshire Puddings’ (Ken & Linda Swift’s team!) coming a close second.

A big thank you to the organisers and helpers on the night. Part of the entrance money was retained by the Club’s social committee to build funds to be spent on Clubhouse improvements.

Charity Donation

Charity Donation to the Derbyshire Autism Service

After a year of fundraising, the 2017 Alfreton Golf Club Captains were pleased to present the Derbyshire Autism Service with a cheque for £4,000 on 4th April.

Olivia Dowling and Trevor Parrett selected DAS as their charity to support during their captaincy year as it was a local service based in Ripley.

It offers information, advice and guidance but above all support to children, young people and adults affected by Autism – with or without diagnosis – and their families.

Olivia and Trevor present the cheque to DAS charity employees Rosie Jones and Janette Ashworth.

From March 2017 through to March 2018 Golf Club Members gave generously to a range of fundraising events through the 12 month period. These included raffles, quiz nights, social golf matches, dinners, sponsored clothing etc. A big thank you to all who donated as well as provided help through the year.

2018 Captains elected

2018 Club Captains elected

Congratulations to our new 2018 Captains, Ellie Bennett and Dereck Martin. At the Golf Club AGM on 21st March they were elected for the next 12 months.

Dereck says; “I was both proud and honoured to be asked to be Captain of Alfreton Golf Club for the year of 2018. Having played with and against many Members from here over the years there was only one Club I was ever going to join on leaving Ormonde Fields Golf Club and this was it. The friendliness and camaraderie of this Club is second to none.”

Ellie adds, “At a time when some golf clubs membership is dwindling, I am very happy to say that our Ladies Section continues to thrive and grow with more new members joining within the last few months.
One of my aims in my year as Lady Captain is to play golf with as many members as I can.”

In addition to the appointment of the Captains, other notable changes were the election of Peter Labas as Men’s Vice Captain and Phil Bennett (no relation to Ellie!) as our incoming Chairman.
A special acknowledgement was made to our outgoing Chairman, David Evans, who had held the post for 10 years, thanking him for his hard work and dedication.

Above in centre is David Evans (outgoing Chairman) celebrating with Brent Ridley and John Carpenter.
