Music Quiz Night

Music Quiz Night

Pete Gould’s regular annual music quiz took place last friday evening at the Club. As requested he made it more straight forward this year and many of the room full of teams were still in with a chance of winning as the last round started.

Ably supported by his wife Kate, the questions were enthusiastically answered by the teams with only the odd element of dissension to his answers!

Congratulations to the winning team lead by past Captain Trevor Parrett supported by wife Linda and guests. Runners up were the current Lady Captain, Ellie Bennett with her 6 person team. A special mention going to the Captain, Pete Labas and Vice Captain’s team who came third with just three in their squad!

Thanks goes to Pete and Kate for taking the time to set up and run the quiz and also to Steve and the catering team for the food, including the tasty lamb stew in the interval.

Firework Party

Bonfire and Fireworks

Saturday 2nd November saw the second Golf Club Bonfire and Fireworks night. Despite the wet weather earlier in the day, it was dry enough for the event to go ahead and there were plenty of visitors and Members who came along to enjoy the evening.

The bonfire was lit around 6.00 with a 30 minute firework display commencing at 7.00. Traditional food was on offer in the Clubhouse which kept the visitors warm and afterwards there was a disco in the main room.

Well done to Steve and his staff for organising another great night out at the Club.

Junior season review

Junior Season Review

Another successful junior season drew to a close yesterday, with the annual awards ceremony at the Clubhouse. This was well supported by mums, dads and grandparents, with Lady Captain Ellie Bennett kindly presenting the prizes.

A big shout out of thanks goes to our Organisers Di Riley and Martyn Baraclough along with everyone else who has supported the Junior section throughout the year.

Prize winners were:

Junior Award: Josh Brewer
Skills for Life Medal: Thomas Brown
Silver Award: Josh Brewer, Thomas Brown
Bronze Award: Izzy Turner
September Award: Lexi Gascoigne and Rylan Greig
Future Tour: Charlie Burnham Josh Brewer, Thomas Brown and Izzy Turner
Improvers of the year: Lexi Gascoigne, Rylan Greig, Harry Arnold, Regan Morton, Abbie Hunt, Maggie Sharpe, Seb Bowater
Youngest Girl: Grace Allsopp
Youngest Boy: Joseph Viles
Trigolf: Jessica Brewer

We are all very proud of our Junior programme that has seen four youngsters representing our Club on the Derbyshire Futures Tour.
Charlie Burnham came joint second in the Under 11s, Josh Brewer came third in the under 10s, Thomas Brown participated in the Under 8s and lets not forget Izzy Turner representing the girls, she came 5th in the under 9s.
See the picture below of the lads collecting their certificates last weekend at Breadsall Priory.

No team is complete without their leaders, so in addition to Diana and Martyn we mustn’t forget our Junior Captain Brandon Haslam. As one of 9 Young Golf Ambassadors in Derbyshire he sets a fabulous example for the young golfers to follow.

This month he came runner up in the Derbyshire Schools Matchplay competition. Playing the number 1 seed Molly Campbell at Matlock in worsening conditions which at one point suggested that the match may have to be postponed, he was 5 down but as they continued Brandon then won 11, 14 and 15 to reduce the deficit to just 2 holes.
A 9 iron to 6 feet on 16 though, gave Molly the luxury of 2 putts for the title which she duly took.

The match was played in a great spirit, and Brandon in particular must be commended for the part he played. Even when 5 down he was always supportive of Molly, a spirit he had shown in the quarter finals, when he had offered his opponent the use of his towel even when the match was in sudden death. he certainly sets a great example.

It’s been a great year all round, so if your youngster is interested in looking at golf as a sport. Make a note to contact us in the spring and come along as give us a try.

County Interclub Foursomes win again!!

County Inter Club Foursomes win - again!

For the second year in a row, Alfreton ladies played some great golf on 27th Sept to win the final of the Derbyshire Golf Inter Club Foursomes Competition.

This year it was our Bronze team that took the spoils playing versus Matlock at the neutral venue of Chevin Golf Club.

The team of Sue Bennett, Anthea Thompson, Bev Housley and Bev Gould have done Club proud.

It was a close and tense match with Anthea and Sue winning their game 1 up and the ‘two Bevs’ halving their game.

In addition to the team who represented the Club today, we musn’t forget Val Sharpe who dropped in to last weeks semi when Bev Housley was unavailable.

Following Debbie Matthews’ success in winning the past Derbyshire Captains Autumn competition yesterday securing the Jubilee and Keenan Cups, it’s been a great season for ladies of Alfreton.

Hardwick Bowl Competition

Hardwick Bowl Mixed Competition

The final mixed competition of the season was held this afternoon; the Hardwick Bowl. This was the first playing of this annual competition, it having been set up after the donation of money towards the prize by Fred Hardwick, an ex Member of the Club who left instructions in his will to set it up.

The format was a pairs foursome with partners being drawn at random. A good turn out saw 11 pairs setting off in a shotgun start.

The two Captains, Ellie Bennett and Pete Labas awarded the prizes in the Clubhouse at the conclusion of the afternoon.

The winners were:
1st: Phil Bennett and Val Sharpe (37pts)
2nd: Stu Anthony and Margaret McCarthy (33pts)

Thanks to the organisers for making the event run smoothly as always.

Captain vs President Match

Captain vs President Match

The annual match between the Captain and the President took place today, 14th September. The teams were drawn FA Cup style, from the ‘hat’ with participants waiting for their partners to be announced whilst enjoying an early brunch.

With the late Summer sunshine providing perfect conditions, players set off for a shotgun start to see if the Captain could take the trophy after a gap of four years.

Afterwards when the results were in, much to Peter Labas’s delight, his Captain’s team had won 4.5-2.5. President Ken Swift commenting at the Trophy presentation that he continues to be one of the few past Captains to have lost to the ladies and now managing to lose as President too.

Well done to all those who supported today’s enjoyable event and to the caterers as well. The Harold Gledhill Trophy is proudly held by the Captain for at least 12 months.

Autumn Invitation Day

2019 Autumn Invitation Day

31st August: Alfreton Golf Club’s Autumn Invitation Day held on the ‘last’ day of summer?

Sunshine and showers presented the golfers with an additional challenge to that of playing our new ‘black ‘course including the par 5 – twice!. The course looked great thanks to our hard working green staff and volunteers, well done to them all.

Captain Pete Labas and his able Vice; Billy Morrision were busy, out on the Friday evening putting the sponsor boards and were also there from early on the Saturday welcoming guests. Thanks goes to the ladies, working hard at the half way house giving us some great cakes and savouries to keep us going. Well done to professional Nev Hallam for his enthusiastic endeavours too. Caterers Donna and Steve plus all the staff also deserve a mention.

Hampshire Hill Trophy finishes

Hampshire Hill Trophy awarded

Last night saw the conclusion of the Hampshire Hill Trophy. It was the fourth round of the 11 hole Friday night summer competition. Playing over the back nine off the white pots, the player with the best three scores would lift the trophy kindly supplied and sponsored by Richard Hampshire from the Hampshire Hill organisation.

Although Dan Bennett won last night’s round with 18pts from Nigel Smith (17). Graham Lunn’s third place with 16 gave him a consistent tally of three scores and made him the overall winner with 54pts.

The full results over the series were:
1st: Graham Lunn – 54pts
2nd: Chris Ball – 51pts
3rd: Dan Bennett – 49pts
4th: Shane Stocks – 49pts

The evenings certainly made for some good fun and social golf. The plan for 2020 is to continue with the Competition and hope to have perhaps 10 rounds organised with the best 5 scores to count.

Thank you to all who participated and to Dan Bennett for getting the competition off the ground.

See pics below of the previous round winners, plus our competition sponsor Richard Hampshire:

Round 1: Shane Stocks, Mark Draper, Dave Gould
Round 2: Graham Lunn, Keith Watson, Chris Burhnam, Matt Howe
Round 3: Chris Ball, Lee Morgan, Graham Lunn, Pete Hilton

Golden Putter 2019

2019 Ladies Golden Putter Comp

The Golden Putter Competition was held yesterday afternoon. A major weekend competition for ladies held annually; giving them the courtesy of the course during the afternoon.

This year, the ladies had to brave the rainy and windy conditions that prevailed for much of the time. In the end first place went to Olivia Dowling. Runner up spot was secured by Ann Eley with Beryl Stewart taking the third place prize.

Additionally Debbie Matthews won the nearest the pin prize.

Once dry and recovered from the windswept conditions the prizes were presented after a carvery meal in the clubhouse with the prestigious ‘Golden’ Putter being awarded to Olivia by this year’s Lady Captain Ellie Bennett.

Well done to all who participated. A big thank you goes to Donna and the staff for the catering service provided on the day.
