New members evening

30 new members enjoy a great evening

Wednesday evening saw a record number of over 30 players take part in one of our regular New Member Texas Scramble Competitions.
The good weather added to a really enjoyable social competition which teamed up existing members with two or three new members for this ten hole competition. The competition was won by Phil Smith’s team of 3 from the Captains team by a couple of points.

Special mention must go to our Captain, Graham Lunn, who had a hole in one on the 7th. Thanks for the Beer Graham.

Thanks to all of the existing members for captaining teams, this competition really wouldn’t go ahead with out you.
Thanks to all of the new members it’s great to meet you and Welcome to Alfreton Golf Club.
Thanks to Steve and Teresa for looking after our liquid requirements.

We’re looking forwards to seeing you play in more social competitions and once again in the next new members competition.

The Rider Cup 2024 results are in

Gordon Kells final report of the 2024 Rider Cup

Well the weather today for the 3rd & final round of matches in this year’s Rider Cup was at least a bit drier than day 2 last Tuesday, but that was the end of the good news for Nottinghamshire!

Trailing by 2 points going in to the 12 singles matches Notts needed to secure 7 points to retain the cup, whilst Derbyshire’s task was to secure 5.5 points to win it. As the attached day 3 results show, the pressure proved too much for Notts and Derbyshire easily secured the points they needed, winning 8-4 on the day and 21-15 overall.

Presenting the trophy to winning captain Nigel Savage (on the right) Dave Lowe (Notts Captain) was gracious in defeat and both captains thanked their respective teams for their support, and the catering team for the lovely Pie Chips Peas & Gravy meal provided to 30 hungry diners. Praise was also given to the greens staff who have worked hard over the last 9 days to keep the course well presented during the 3 days of play despite what the weather has continued to throw at us.

So that narrows the difference in the overall number of wins to just 2, with Notts holding a 7-5 advantage from the 12 Rider Cups held so far. Will Derbyshire continue to narrow the gap next year?  Certainly that will be the intention of their 2025 Rider Cup Captain Paul Russell, but we can also be sure the Notts Captain, Mike Rapkins, will be equally determined to wrest the cup back from its temporary loan to Derbyshire!!

Whatever the outcome, it is likely to be another well supported and closely contested spectacle!

Well the 2024 Rider cup is nicely balance after day 2 of the Annual Seniors competition was completed on Tuesday, despite the rain.

Gordon Kells reports -Well in between the showers the Day 2 matches of our Seniors Rider Cup Tournament took place earlier today.

This time it was better ball match play over the front 9 ‘morning’ holes followed by 4 somes match play over the back 9 ‘afternoon’ holes.

Derbyshire started the day with a two point advantage, leading 7-5 after day 1. Today’s golf was closely contested and Notts had managed to fight back to level with just the final group’s results to come in. Sadly, for Notts, it was a double win for Derbyshire so the day ended level on 6 all and Notts still trail by 2 points going in to the final day 3 singles matches on Thursday.

Full details of today’s results are attached, as are the pairings for Thursday’s singles. If Notts can win 7 of the 12 points available, they will retain the Rider Cup. Derbyshire’s task is to secure 5.5 of those points to win it for themselves. So as usual it really is all up for grabs come Thursday!!

Good Luck, and may the best team win!!

Results from Day one of the RIDER CUP

So despite Tuesday night’s heavy rain, and Wednesday’s persistent rain during the day, a dry night and fresh breeze led to the course being eminently playable for Day One of our Seniors Rider Cup Tournament.

Well done to Derbyshire for taking a 7 – 5 lead (Day One detailed results attached) and commiserations to Notts who were level at five points all until the 6th and final match came in with a double win for Derbyshire.

It’s certainly a better position than Derbyshire were in last year when they trailed by 3 points (4.5 – 7.5) after day 1, but can they hold or extend that lead on day 2, or will Notts fight back?

Day Two running order is attached so you can see who’s playing who, and forecast what you think the standings might be come end of play next Tuesday!

Chatsworth Cup Up-date

Chatsworth Cup 2024

Alfreton went to play at Chatsworth yesterday for our annual friendly match but unfortunately after 6 holes it was decided by both team captains to abandon the match and call players in because it was raining so much, the match was called a draw.

I would like to thank John Lawrence my Vice Captain for stepping in as captain for the day because I am still on holiday in sunny Mykonos. After speaking to John he asked me to thank Chatsworth for a warm welcome and the food was very delicious as always.

Details of new handicap system

As you are aware the new handicap system comes into effect on Monday 1st April. Handicaps will be based on the difference between Course Rating and Par. For Men this will mean a two shot increase for most, but not all, when playing the Gold Course and no change or a reduction for players on the Silver Course.

The details are posted on noticeboards in the Clubhouse and will be laminated and placed on the board near the first tee. A new board will be purchased in the Autumn as the Course is to be re-rated in July/August when the course rating may change.

The increase of handicaps on the Gold Course will mean that fewer players will be eligible to play in the first division of competitions which are divided, and will result in an imbalance in the numbers between the two divisions. The Greens Committee have decided to adjust the Course Handicap limits to 1 to 17 for the first division and 18 to 34 for the second division. The Board Competition limit will remain at 28.
