The seniors had a glorious day for their latest competition this Tuesday (11^th August). Clear skies, warm sunshine, and just enough of a breeze to keep the temperature from getting too hot. Combined with superb greens one might think conditions were perfect for high scoring, but the reality is that with rock hard and fast fairways from the continuing dry spell most players struggled to score well.

As always there were a few exceptions and there was a 3 way tie on 40 points at the top of the pile. Back 9 countback protocol determined that Gordon Kells finished 3^rd, Brent Ridley 2^nd and the winner was Trevor Haslam.

There were many cries of “Oh No Not Again!!” when that result was announced, and that’s not really surprising as this is the 3^rd time in the last 4 years that Trevor has won this particular trophy! Next year we are thinking of renaming it the Trevor Haslam Trophy, and banning people from playing for their own trophies – it’s the only way we can think of ensuring someone else wins it!!

There’s a friendly match at home to Chatsworth on Thursday and then it’s the Birks Haywood Trophy next Tuesday. That’s a pairs competition and rumour has it that the largest brown envelope might secure Trevor Haslam as your partner (if it’s deemed big enough!!) 😊

Dear All,

The Kells household received some exciting news recently. Our daughter, Lisa Kells, has been invited to join Team UK for an International Power Lifting competition against the USA!

It is a huge honour, which she has accepted, and we are immensely proud of her. However there is a snag in that the event will be in Reno (on the 14^th October) and the selected athletes have to self-fund all their own flights, accommodation and food costs (expected to be over £2,500).

Please see the attached document for further information of Lisa’s Power Lifting ability and the reason why, despite being a fully qualified doctor / surgeon, she needs your help to fund her International Competition Dream.

If you can help her with a donation towards her costs she would be incredibly grateful, and of course we will let you know how she gets on after the 14^th October!

Just a reminder of events happening soon, today we have the Ladies Open AM AM planned and tomorrow the seniors travel to Chatsworth.

On Thursday the Ladies hold a Stableford  Bronze Final competition, whilst the Juniors will meet at 4pm

Friday is the Hampshire Hill competition

Sat. is the Mens. August medal and Sunday is a Derbyshire Futures Tour at 2pm

Tuesday is the Ladies Morewood Cup whilst the Chatsworth team travel to us for a Mens. match at 4pm

On Wednesday there is a Men/Ladies Shotgun 3 Club competition which can be played over the 10 holes anytime during the day.

The Chatsworth team travel to us for the return Seniors match on Thursday at 4pm

If you looking to book a Sunday carvery, with the staff limited due to summer holidays and other commitments the only summer one is on Sunday 23rd August so get yor table booked quickly.

Before all that don’t forget this weekend we have Freddy Mercury on stage and the Travelling Taverna

Finally for now the postponed Fashion show will take place on Wed. 9th September 7:30 pm start.

Brent Ridley (right) & Graham Shinfield (left) received their Division 1 and Division 2 Shields from Seniors Captain Nigel Savage following their success in today’s competition.  Nigel’s duties were particularly galling for him as he only lost the Division 1 title to Brent on a back 9 countback having played too safe on the final hole and ending up well bunkered!!

It was a smaller field than normal due to the absence of several regulars who’d been away on a 3 day golfing break, and several more absent due to grandfather duty now that the schools are closed for summer! But that didn’t prevent those who did play from enjoying the continuing fine weather and the amazing condition of the course given the drought conditions our greenstaff are having to contend with.

Next up is a friendly match away at Chatsworth on Wednesday 5^th August. That should prove an interesting challenge if ground conditions remain as hard and fast as they are at the moment, but don’t worry Nigel, Chatsworth doesn’t have any bunkers!!

Girls flyer 2026

Originally scheduled for the 5^th February this competition had to be postponed due to the exceptionally wet conditions that prevailed for the first quarter of the year. On the plus side that did mean the 12 pairs who competed did get to play in much nicer conditions than usual, and on a course that’s being brought to peak condition ahead of this coming weekend’s Men’s Open Invitation Day competition. There looks to be a few tee times still available if you want to enter that, so book on line or via the Pro if you’re interested.

But back to today’s comp, which was a pairs better ball stableford format off 85% handicap allowance. Pairings were determined by splitting the field in half based on handicap and randomly selecting one player from each pool to play together. Two pairs on 40 points took 5^th and 4^th places, whilst another 2 pairs on 41 points took 3^rd and 2^nd with both ties settled on back9 countbacks. However the winners, Gary Crompton & Dave Lowe, romped to victory with a very impressive 44 points.

So many congratulations to them, commiserations to the rest of us, and thanks to everyone for supporting the comp!

A glorious final day of April saw AGC’s seniors take to the course for the ‘fun’ comp of 3 clubs and a putter.

The fine weather of the last few weeks has really seen the course dry out, the grass grow, and the ground firm up so the ball now runs a lot further! The hard work of Andy & his team is much appreciated with clear up of winter debris and cutting definition of fairways now making the course look truly stunning.

With only 3 clubs + a putter in your bag you have to be able to play several ‘inventive shots’, so much deliberation was evident by all players as they  tried to work out which 3 clubs would make a winning combination. We can reveal that this year’s winner selected a 3 wood, 7 wood and 9 iron as his weapons of choice.  We can also reveal the winner wasn’t Ian Cook, who was trying for a hat trick of wins having won this trophy in both 2024 and 2025.

With the bank holiday weekend upon us a lot of our regular seniors were away on holiday, so there was a reduced field of 19 players trying for glory. Full results are tabulated below (and in the attached pdf) but in third place was Stan Munks with 34 points. Taking the silver runner up slot was Keith Else, also with 34 points, but a better back 9. This year’s winner, with 35 points, was Ross Poyner who, with the Senior’s Captain being one of the holidaymakers, received his trophy from the Treasurer, Gordon Kells.
