Yesterday our Seniors Section competed for their Division 1 and 2 Shields. This was an individual stableford competition off 95% handicap allowance played over the Silver course. The field was split in to two equal pools based on handicaps with the lower handicappers playing for the Division 1 title and the higher handicappers the Division 2 title.

Early showers meant umbrellas were up and down, and waterproofs on and off, but that ultimately gave way to some nice warm summer sunshine so everyone ended up dry. The course was in brilliant condition, but even in great condition and benign weather Alfreton can be a significant challenge if you don’t put the ball in the right spots, and this was reflected in the scores.

In the golfing equivalent of a photo finish Gordon Kells took the Division 2 title with 35 points, narrowly beating Graham Shinfield by virtue of a better back 9. In Division 1 Trevor Parrett had a more comfortable margin of victory by being the only player to beat his handicap allowance. His 39 points secured a winning margin of 3 points from Paul Russell’s very credible 36 points.
