Match versus County Junior Boys

Alfreton’s men started their season of matches today against the cream of Derbyshire’s youth. Twelve of the most talented young players from across the County were pitched against a dozen of Alfreton’s players in a pairs, match-play competition. It was a welcome return to this regular fixture after the Covid issues of the past couple of years

Derbyshire youth took an early 2-0 lead; Taylor Coleman (team Captain) and Shearer Chohan coming from two down to beat Club Professional Nev Hallam and Club Captain Phil Taylor 3 & 2. Quinn Tinkler (WHI -0.8!) and Adam Wood also won 5 & 4 against Gary Griffiths and John Baugh.

However the youngsters didn’t have things all their own way, Kev Rawson and John Lawrence beat Harry Dronford and Zach Alway 5 & 4 and then Chris Townsend and Glynn Walters narrowly beat Matt Edwards and Adam Gentles 2 & 1.

With the scores tied at 2 each, the Derbyshire youngsters then took the lead, Will Guggerty and Jacob Kenworthy beating Phil Walters and Kev Jones 3 & 2. The last match was a tight affair, but Graham Lunn and Andy Burnham won 2 & 1, against James Lambert and Ollie Neal to finally level the match at 3 games all.

The Derbyshire youth have some very talented players, and the way they conducted themselves out on the course and afterwards, they are no doubt, a real credit to the County.

A big thankyou to Paul Smith, Derbyshire Youth team manager and their parents for the supporting role they play with these gifted youngsters.

Thankyou and well done to the Alfreton team players for turning out and achieving a creditable draw against such brilliant youngsters, and finally, thankyou to Steve and Teresa for providing a welcoming 19th with burger and chips for the young lads.
