Rider Cup 2021

The ninth running of the Seniors Rider Cup competition was completed today. Traditionally a match between teams representing Derbyshire and Notts run each year. However due to Covid restrictions in 2020 and bad weather in 2019 this was the first running in November since 2018.

Day One, on Nov 2nd, saw Derbyshire take a 8-4 lead after sessions of foursomes and fourballs. Day 2 played on 9th Nov was a closer affair with the points being shared 6-6.

So, heading in to today’s 12 singles games. Derbyshire, Captained by Malc Draycott, held a 14-10 lead, needing just 4 further points to retain the trophy which they had won back in January 2020 (when the weather postponed 2019 Trophy was last played.)

For some reason; recently the Derbyshire team seem to play well in the singles but today saw a different outcome. The Notts team winning 7.5 out of the 12 games, including 5 of the last 6.

The overall result waited upon the last two pairs coming in, with Derbyshire’s Stu Anthony securing the winning point making the final score Derbys 18.5 -17.5 Notts.

Trevor Haslam, the Notts Captain ‘reluctanly’ presented  Malc and Derbyshire with the Trophy after the teams had enjoyed a great two course lunch in the Clubhouse. Thanks go the Steve Slater and his team for the food and service.

Congratulations goes to all who organised and participated in the golf, it was a very sociable and friendly  three days played in the right spirit.

Notts now lead the fixture 5-4, so roll on 2022 for the next rematch.
